STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN (Shake & Bang)

40cpe: Ahh, but how do I fix that from happening? Mart, I just might try your switcheroo.
Any idea if shortening those shackles back to stock length would make a difference with these two parts interfering? I feel I'm getting close,,,,thanks to all you guys....

TJ, Between the frt axle & frame measures 3-1/4". Like I mentioned, the Rubber Bumpers are missing, but it doesn't appear the axle & frame have been hitting each other.
Thanks, Johnny
Also, the distance between the holes on these shackles measures 4-1/4" (ctr to ctr). Does anyone know that distance on stock shackles?
The stock shackles are 2 1/2"
The pitman arm is 7"long. on my 48 car outback.
What engine do you have.
I just put a 8ba 49-53 engine in a 47 and the drag link was hitting the oil pan had to bend pitman arm down. This may not be your problem.

My stupidity has kicked in. Parts terminology has me confused and up to this point I really thought I was doing good! I DO know my *** from my elbow, I assure you. Beyond that, not so sure!

George/Maine. My engine is the original 59A and there is no problem with the oil pan. Thanks for that shackle measurement. (so my car has shackles about 1-3/4 inches over stock.)

When you get the stock shackles and you still have problem.
My guess the drag link right side near the end its hitting the wish bone.
Quick test put steering wheel in center and see if you get 2 turns Left and right.
When its in center the right wheel should be straight.
Maybe off and hitting wish bone.do to link bent wrong or not adjusted correct.
So in the end steering wheel center ,right front straight.

If the rubber ball has disintegrated the axle will probably be a bit further back than it should be and will make the clearance problem worse.

George/Maine I did notice the passenger side of the drag link IS rubbing against the wishbone (torsion bar). But, I'm a bit unclear about the rest of your explanation.

In pic #22 you can adjust so it doesn't hit wish bone if you only need 1" or so.
I had to bend my drag link ,you will need heat.
When it hits the wise bone you feel it at steering wheel.
You don't want it to hit anything.

The right wheel has to be straight, then the steering wheel needs to be in center.
key way 12 or 6 clock or bars 9 and 3 o'clock.
Now if you bend the drag link down makes it shorter and wheel turns in so you have some room to take up at pitman arm adjustment.

UREKA!!!!!!!!!!
I want to take this opportunity to thank every single one of you who helped me out with this "banging front end" problem I was experiencing. Once I changed the long shackles the PO had installed with stock length ones the interference issue I was having disappeared. I was in such a hurry to thank you all, I didn't take the time to wash the grease off my hands. (greasy hands and now the keyboard). For what it's worth no spring spreader was needed. Jack stands, small hydraulic jack and it was all suprisingly easy. Thanks again, Johnny (another Ford Barn satisfied customer).
