Just Black shoe wax. You really are not 'buffing' per se', but just wiping off the excess and burnishing it in.
 
Goo B Gone works well to remove any grime that has been coming off onto your hands and, when rinsed off with a damp cloth and dried, leaves a clean satin finish. You can polish and buff from there if desired.
 
I tried all the methods listed by the other guys. Still got black hands. Two things work: paint it (like my buddy did his) or, like I did, cover it. This one from amazon fits a Model A...and if you decide you don't like it, it's easy to undo:
