Steering 'Wheel Coating

Anyone have any ideas for a coating of the hard rubber? My hands get dirty, then my pant legs get dirty when I wipe the hands, then the Wife gets testy about wiping dirt on the pants. I would like to avoid having to make the choice between Wife and steering wheel. Thanks

My 1928 brown steering wheel is a real pain. Every time it gets humid I have steering wheel scum all over my hands and pants. I'm thinking of trying car polish or Johnson's floor paste wax to see if that will help.

I made a real nice leather cover from two I bought at Pep Boys. I cut and sewed two to make it fit the larger diameter. It's not the rap around kind but has the waxed thread sewing the seam on the inside. Makes it a real comfortable "padded" wheel.

I've restored a few antique tractor steering wheels....which seem to be made of the same stuff as the model A. I used a good coating of black epoxy paint. Not original but a lot cleaner !

I've been there and done that. I wet sanded for several hours till I was satistied or maybe just tired of sanding. Used 800 grit ( I was out of 320 at the time). I would recommend starting out with something like 320 grit (depending on the condition of your wheel and working down to either 600 and possibly something finer. I used a 5 gal bucket of water sitting in the floor between my legs and kept the wheel wet. Go at it till you get it smooth as is possible then let it dry overnight. I painted mine with a spray can of black high gloss acrylic enamel, designated on the can "for automotive use". If you want it really slick, wet sand it again with 1000 grit and respray. I was very pleased with the way it turned out for me and no more mess on my hands or pants.
I hope this helps.

My brown/red steering wheel on my '28 pickup had the same problem. As Don Turley said, I coated it with several coats of matt finish clear, sanding between each coat. Most people dont know the difference. ken
