Steering spindle arms question

Could someone tell me what is the wrench/socket size of the nut that holds the steering arms to the spindles. Would it work best to use a socket with a long extension 1/2 drive. I trying to get the tools together to try to remove the arms. Also what would the torque setting be when replacing that nut, which has a cotter pin. Thanks !

A-21878 is a castle nut that takes a 1 1/16" socket wrench to tighten. I don't use a torque wrench, but make them good and tight.

The Parts Price List is where I found the size. Les Andrew's Mechanics book is also good about telling the size of wrenches needed for each job.

Parts Price List, Service Bulletins, and the Judging Standards all have good information whether your car is "just a driver", or a high points car, or a survivor.

Tom is right they should be very tight, I do not cotter pin them until after I road test the car & do a front end allignment, then I retighten them and cotter pin.

Thanks guys, after removing the the cotter pin and the nut should the arm come out fairly easy. I would think with all the grease in that location there should be little or no rust. Do I need to drive them out with a punch and a good size hammer ?? About the parts price list, is that the original list from Ford or something else ?? Thanks again !

Snyder's Part #BA2, about $10

Remove the nut. Turn the nut around and screw it back on castles first. Leave one or two threads of the nut exposed beyond the spindle arm. Hit NUT with hammer . Nut protects spindle arm threads. It will move. After you see it move, remove the nut and the arm can be removed with your hand.
