Steering shaft question 1939 pickup

Can someone tell me what the two small holes in the steering shaft are for? They are about 1/4" diameter each. See picture below, I put the steering tube next the shaft for reference. I believe the whole setup is out of a 1940 pickup or car, even though I am working on a 1939.

The two holes are for the locking ring that is part of the column lock mechanism. The lock ring has grooves in it for the locking pin to slip into it and lock the column.

Thanks for the replies, awesome! i didn't know that part even existed, mine is missing for sure. Do you guys know how it works with that z shaped slot? Does the key switch, when the key is rotated, push the center pin down into that z slot, not sure why the slot is shaped like a z....

That Z slot is so you can squeeze the collar so it will fit tight on the shaft or spread to make it easy to remove, nothing more than that.

The lock plunger engages the rectangular hole opposite the "Z" slot.

The set screws that hold the collar in place have unthreaded area that fit into the holes. The set screws are installed and then the threaded hole in the collar is peened over to prevent the screws from coming loose. Locktight will work also.
