Steering light rod

Last month my son and I were having a beer out in the barn and all of the sudden the horn blared out twice. We stepped out into the ‘run-through’ and the car was sitting there with one on around (ghosts – there are stories out here on this old farm).

A month on and I am driving down the road and the horn starts sounding off. Wiggled the switch and it stopped, but switch end has now come undone. Are these thing fixable or should I just plan on buying a new one?

As I remember (30 years ago) the removal and install is not that easy. Had to unbolt the steering column and tilt it down to bring the rod in through the rear roll down window.

I think this is pretty straight forward as to which rod to buy: Mike’s shows only one road used for 1931 models – Gemmer ‘H’. Still, I think I should measure. Is measurement from top of rod down to ‘keeper groove’?

Length is measured from center of groove to bottom side of horn button. This is explained in both Bratton's and Snyder's catalogs, I believe. Consider yourself lucky to have a relatively easy rod removal option, also if you still have original steering gear.

As you may know, the horn button works by connecting a hot lead from the horn to ground (both wires coming out of horn are hot, but only grounding one of them will blow horn). Thus, it's possible that an intermittent short anywhere else in the wiring from the horn to the light switch or in the light switch itself could be the culprit.
