Steering gears

Can later gears be substituted for a slower ratio, or is that upper column stuff not interchangable...or am I going about this completely wrong? I am trying to not have the car steer as quick like a go-cart.

I think the head gears are all the same but the earlier sun and planet gears are smaller IDs, The web spacing on the shaft (3 pins ) may be diffent as well... not too sure about that; but Ill gaurantee the air wonrt pop the coils out unless you hook up a 1 inch hose to the 250 Ingersoll, then stand back... Pull them stright up with pliers please! ws

Will, I just told him whatever works. Where's your sense of adventure? I'll guarantee if the coils were tight and there weren't any opportunities for the air to escape around them you could move them with under 80 psi. Now that doesn't guarantee being safe from any shrapnell but we may have just invented the whole high pressure method of coil extraction. Maybe pumping some oil into it with about 10,000 psi will move something.

Take caution in changing to 5:1 from the 4:1 that was std prior to late '24.

The steering shaft with its pinion face and the three pinions is different for the new 5:1 so you need a new shaft or a used 5:1 shaft. The gear case can be interchanged, but not the shaft or the 5:1 gears.
