Steering Gearbox Mounting Bolt direction.

I need proof on something. Can anyone point me to where it is written in the Stds about the direction of the A-21122 Bolt that attaches the Steering Gearbox Housing to the Frame Rail?

The nuts are on the outside of the frame so the cotter pins can more easily be installed.

I found a picture of the very early chassis Gary Karr was restoring. It shows the nuts are on the outside of the frame. He received a lot of point in judging, so the nuts on the outside are probably correct, plus Gary knows what he is doing.

I would think it would be in Area 8, but I looked and didn't see anything. Not that I'm a Fine Points guy anyhow...

FWIW, when I took apart my unmolested '30 Town Sedan that's the way the steering box was mounted. 90K original miles, but I can't swear the steering box had never been off.

This has been asked a few times re: different assemblies. The consensus seems to be, if the JS doesn't mention fastener orientation when describing the assembly, then there's no official right or wrong way. If you could find a factory photo of the assembled part, that would "rule in" that particular orientation, but not necessarily rule out any other one.

Golden Rule # 1 in Fine Point Judging : Never give a Judge something to question.

The operative word in Judging Standards is 'Standards'. It's acknowledged that variations took place on the assembly lines & between plants but for the sake of conformity, we judge by the 'Standards'.

If you can provide proof of something other wise, present it to the Judging Standards committee before a National Meet asking for a variance in that Area. The JSC generally is very generous.

Unless I misread, I don't think Brent was asking for a variance from a published standard, he was asking if there is a published standard. I suspect he'd be more than happy to install this steering box the correct way, he just wants to know if there is a correct way.

Jay,

Brent isn't new to Judging so my response was for others who haven't attempted a Fine Point restoration.

My suspicion is things are a bit quiet down in Tennessee this evening and Brent is 'funning us.

Regarding standards in production: I know this is not a Model A, but years ago there was an original Model T that had a nail or nails used instead of cotter keys to secure the nut(s) on the axle(s). It must have been put there late on a Friday just before a shift change.
