Hi all,
I own a 1928 model A with a very bad incomplete steering gear. I have a very good 1930 model steering gear assembly as a replacement. I hope to find help in this forum to answer the following question:Can a 1928 steering gear be replaced by a 1930 steering gear? What extra parts do I possiblyneed to fit this in my car?
Thanks

Hi Leen,

Welcome to the club. You can switch out your seven tooth steering box for a two tooth box fairly easily. Or if you want I believe they are producing all of the parts to rebuild the one you have. If you swap out, you will need a new box, all new gears, seals and bearings. If you have a catalogue from anyof the major parts houses they have exploded views of the box and what you will need to get.

I've been waiting for someone that has done this. This can be done fairly easily. The 2 tooth is much better than the 7. I've not done it, but, I think beside the 2 tooth box you'll need the later steering column.

You can swap the 1930 good complete column for your bad column. You'll need a steering wheel to fit the 1930 column.

Then you can keep driving while you look for parts to rebuild your original column.

I've changed from seven tooth to two tooth steering and it's a one for one swap if you have the entire column and box assembly to put in. All you need then is a good keyed steering wheel instead of the splined one that was used on the seven tooth column.

You will need a new light switch and horn rod. there are two different length rods that use the 28-29 style horn button and lever . The Ford style is 45-3/4 inches long and the Gemmer style is 45 inches long. I haven't made this swap personally. I'm sure that others can advise which length rod to use. It is a popular swap.. The spark and throttle levers will be shorter with the later column, But if that is ok with you, it will work good and you will have a more adjustable steering unit.
