Can anyone tell me the difference in length between a ford and mercury steering column, this is on a 1947 Mercury. I have one that is about 47 1/2” from the steering box to the end of the shaft where the steering wheel mounts.

The Merc columns are longer, for sure. The wheelbase on the Merc is 4" longer than the Ford. That entire four inches is in front of the firewall, right in the area between the firewall and the location of the steering box. I don't know the exact length difference, but since the column is mounted on the angle, it must be at least four inches longer.
