Steering column

Happy New Year to All!!
I just finished cleaning out the gas tank on our '29 Phaeton and I removed it to do the deed. While this was going on, I removed many other parts of the car to clean or repair, but none of the parts removed had anything to do with the steering column except the tank.
I am putting it all back together and the column does not want to go the last inch or so to seat back into the bracket on the tank. The bracket was not removed or touched except to sand and repaint.
Any thoughts would be appreciated....

Just loosen the two bolts holding the box to the frame and push it up into place.While you were working on it you leaned on the wheel,probably a dozen times.You pushed it down without even feeling it drop.

That did it..I had called myself being super careful not to touch it but obviously I had somewhere along the way... I was scared to put any force on it now as I keep reading the horror stories from others about working on the steering... Thanks again!!
