Steering column tube question

Can anyone advise if there are different lengths of the tube that surrounds the steering shaft that connects to the steering box?? 2 tooth steering system is being used.

Yes, there were at least 2 different length tubes. I do not know the dimensions off hand but can get them for you if you need them. Nearest I can tell, based on Judging Standards, the early 1930 vehicles had the shorter tube. There also seems to be suggestion that perhaps some Victorias, Deluxe 2 door Phaetons, and maybe A400s had a short tube to go along with their longer upper steering column bracket. As the earliest 2 tooth columns were installed starting in Feb 1929 and they had a worm shaft that was 43" long as opposed to 44", it stands to reason they may have used this shaft through early 1930 along with the shorter tube.

Bobbader- I would appreciate it if you could find the lengths of the tubes.. We have a car in my shop that were are having trouble with the steering wheel not turning on when tightened down.

Hello,Snyders show two different length on the steering shaft with worm, a 43 inch and a 44 inch, so apparently the would be different outer columns, the outer column on my car is 38 1/2 inches from the gear box to end , the shaft itself is 44 inch, this is a late 31 Roadster.Perhaps the outer column is mismatch to the shaft? Also make sure the column is tight to the gearbox housing. Light rods will also vary in length I think 3 possible lengths.

The 28-29 has a different tube for the different quadrant, light switch rod and levers. The 30-31 had it's own quadrant, light switch rod, and levers as well as a different gas tank so that all factors into the length.

on the 30-31 two tooth steering boxes there were two different length tubes.

for the 43" shaft the tube should measure 37" long
for the 44" shaft the tube should measure 38" long

The first month of 1930 had the short column on 2-tooth assemblies. The quadrant was changed for the new steering wheel but those early 30 columns may have been shorter than the 29 column due to that since they still had screws holding the quadrants on but I don't know for sure.

Folks can now shorten the long tube to work for a short shaft as used in 1929 2-tooth assemblies. They would need the early quadrant to finish. Some shorten the old 7-tooth columns and cut the box off the bottom.
