Steering Column Support Bracket Clamp

Can someone tell me the proper color for the steering column support clamp bracket on a 29? In the past I have always painted them the same color as the gas tank. I ordered a new repro & it came with a black finish. I'm thinking I should remove the black & paint it the same as the gas tank. Thanks.

Leave it black. I believe this is correct.

It's risky arguing with Peter, but I have always understood the clamp should be body color.

I just looked at the standards--doesn't say about the clamp, but does say the screws should be cad or body color. I can't see how the screws would be body color and the clamp black.

Not sure about a 29 but can tell you for sure my 30 Cabriolet was painted body color. It was painted on the tank as the back was not painted.

I don't know what is considered correct, but I have two 29's that were restored by two different guys, and on both cars the clamp is the gas tank/body color.

Mean i painted my car black based on the color i found the clamp? I can't see Ford paint the clamp with screws and then take off painted screws to place in steering column w/rubber gromet.

My three unrestored cars all have lower clamps that are painted the body color. Fasteners are plated.

Not that I can find. Page 8-2 (top right) says the fillister-head screws are cadmium or body color but says nothing about the clamp.

I can't see the screws being body color and the clamp being black.

I would think that the lower clamp half would have been held in place by some sort of plugs for when the body was painted (lower body color) and then the lower clamp installed as the body was dropped into place and the steering column secured.

Lower clamps for service would probably have been painted flat or gloss black.

Mine is the same color as the gas tank/body color. More than likely that is the way it was, it just comes in a black finish so you can repaint it as necessary.
