Steering column help requested

I am getting my frame ready to send out for sandblast and painting. I removed outer sleeve of steering column. Does the inner rod come out from the steering gear box or does it remain with the steering box when I take it loose from the frame? Maybe the worm gear is attached to this inner rod?
Is there a drain plug to drain oil from steering box to replace the oil?
As always, I appreciate any info you can help me with. I have searched my shop manual and can’t find answers to these things.

Perhaps I am misinterpreting your question but, if you plan to sandblast the steering box and column, I would leave it fully assembled and tape off the open end at the top f the column so no sand gets inside the column or box.
It might be better to clean the up the steering box and column using a wire brush and degreaser.

I want to remove the steering box before going to sandblasting. I just can’t get the rod out of the steering box. Does it come out? What is procedure for removing the rod from the gear box if it does come out?

you need to remove the steering box and strip the shaft will come out the bottom with the worm attached. Try to locate a copy of Vern Tandels book about steering easy to read and step by step

Thank you. I wondered if the worm gear wasn’t attached. Appreciate your help.

The worm IS attached, & it's one hell of a press fit. The box needs to be disassembled to accomplish anything like that. I'd remove the box/column assembly from chassis and clean it up on the bench. DD

Jim,
I tend to agree with V8COOPMAN on this. Although i have never had a frame sandblasted. (Maybe someday?) Sand has a chance to get in there, and that would not be good.

Regards,
Chris

I would recommend that you read up on repair/rebuilding your F1 steering box - Vern Tardel's "Let Me Help You Series" it details this nicely in booklet No.1 Ford Steering Service, Repair & Modification.

These steering boxes must be assembled/adjusted correctly or they simply don't work as intended.

Thanks everyone. I ordered book you recommended but am going to remove steering box and column as a unit before going to sandblaster. I appreciate you guys and always sharing your knowledge quickly when I have a question. [emoji4]

If your steering box is working just fine, why take it apart?
One grain of sand will destroy it.

Not taking it apart. Just removing it so that it doesn’t get sand in it when frame is being sandblasted.
