Steering box

I have a worn out '28 7 tooth steering box. I have two vendors and each have rebuilt 28 steering boxes for sale. One is an original rebuilt 7 tooth the other has a rebuilt F-100. Of the two which steering box is the best. I know the F-100 will take some cutting and welding but I can handle that.

To first answer your question, we need to know whether you want your vehicle to remain original -or whether modified is acceptable. The F-100 box is definitely better because the technology is 20+ years newer over the 7 tooth.

Also, if you purchase Gross F-100 conversion, I'm pretty sure it is 'plug & play' when you receive it (No cutting nor welding needed)

The F-100 box has a roller bearing sector whereas the 7-tooth box has a sliding sector. The roller sector has far less friction so it steers will less effort. Also the F-100 box has more turns lock to lock which reduces the effort, but makes it less responsive. I have the F-100 box. With my heavy Fordor I can move the steering while not moving. Another plus with the F-100 box is that it is really easy to adjust, just one adjustment.

The 7-tooth sector gearbox design is inferior. Ford figured it out in early '29 and moved to the superior 2-tooth design.

So unless you are really motivated to keep your '28 A as original as possible, I recommend you replace the 7-tooth box with a later steering gear box. That could be a 2-tooth A box (hard to find for the '28-29, but they are out there) or the F-100 box from Randy Gross.

Randy does all the cutting and welding, so you don't have to. You just bolt it in.

I am hoping to get a box from Randy but my Phaeton is RHD and so far we don’t have a core. Randy says that the guts are not a problem but he has to have the housing. If any of our down under friends can help me out I would appreciate it .

original--i have done complete rebuilds on a few 7 tooth boxes. all the stuff in there needs to be changed. they work sort of ok (for 1928) but once they wear there is NO adjustment.
or
still original--if you have access to a 2 tooth box have that rebuilt or if available get a rebuilt from a vender, they will most likely want a core.
or
nicest to steer--the f100 is a way better box if you don't mind the mod.

Are you looking for a 2-tooth RHD steering box? I have one available if you are.
