Steering box

I have a 51 F series truck with a sloppy steering box. Are there bolt on later models that would fit or would you have it rebuilt. If rebuilt is the direction, any recommendations of someone to do the rebuild. Thanks in advance for your input.

There are more parts available for the F1 series trucks since they are popular . You can get steering shafts with new worm and replacement roller sector gear/pin. All the soft parts & bearings are available. The later f-100 boxes are similar but not a bolt in. I rebuild my own so if I can do it you likely have a mechanic near you with enough experience to do it. It's the easiest rotating type component assembly on the truck to rebuild. Many times all they need is a new worm gear & some gaskets.

The f1 boxes share the same internals as the 39-48 car boxes, so parts are readily available. If you can turn up a car box in excellent shape you could use the parts in your box. Repro worms and sectors are available too.

Mart.
