Just a quick question, my manual is at a friends place right now. What is the proceedure for removing the steering box? Do the pedals have to be removed? Any tricks or helpfull hints? '28 tudoor, 7 tooth I assume.

Floor boards, pedals and starter need to come out to get the column up into the car. Of course the Pitman arm and drag link as well. Removing a limber friend from his recliner to help is a plus.:D

If you take the steering wheel off, you can snake it out the bottom, If not, it has to come out thru the driver's door. Either way, all the stuff said above has to be done as well.

If you are only removing the box and shaft, and not the collum . All you have to do is remove the steering wheel ,the light switch ,pull the horn rod up some, take the pittman arm off, unbolt the box and collum clamp. Jack the front of the car up remove the box from under the car. Replace in reverse order. Did one the other day in about 1 hour.

Thanks guys. Got it off but it took some time, don't think it has been off since 1928 and it was a bit of a fight.

Next is removing the front end. What is the best way to support the car with the front axel removed? Going to be working on it from underneath to take up mains, install new rods and pistons, etc. and don't want it coming down on anybody. Kind of hard to have a beam go from side to side with the engine in place. Whatever I do, there will be a bunch of tires under there for a backup.

Thanks again to all that responded.

A good set of jack stands, probably would take a 6-ton size to support the frame without an axle under it.

I use jack stands that I made from 42-48 axle hsgs by cutting off the outer ends & welding on a short piece of 3" channel.I used these hsgs as they are longer than the earlier hsgs. They work great for removing front or rear axles.

Except the 7-tooth doesn't come apart that way.
