Steering box removal question

I just aquired a 30 coupe and I think I need to remove the steering box. It has alot of play in the sector shaft that the drag link connects to. It moves quite abit back and forth and also a little up and down. Everything else in the front end seems nice and snug. So I'm assuming I need to remove the box? Can I just unbolt it from the frame and remove the steering wheel and slip it out of the bottom of the steering column? Or do I have to also pull the whole column? In Les Andrews' book it looks like a big job? Also I thought I would do the exchange that Synders' has for a rebuilt box. Has any buddy here used one? It is a 2 tooth box. I'm new to Model As but I enjoy working on them.

You will need to remove the starter, brake and clutch pedals and follow the directions in Les Andrews book. A friend of mine in our club has a set of DVDs from the Dallis club on how to rebuild the box. He said it has very clear directions.

Everything will come out through the inside of the car
You'll have to unlatch the light switch from the bottom of the steering box, pull the floor boards, clutch and brake pedals, and I think the starter as well.

I'm in the process of re-building mine and have removed it from the CC PU though the top. Follow the directions in Les' book and it's really quite simple to remove with the steering wheel in place. Mine also had a lot of "slop" in the steering area, and I was able to adjust it without removing the column following the directions in Les' book. However, mine leaked the 600W grease like a sieve so I pulled it to replace parts and gaskets. The directions for adjusting the steering while in the vehicle is in the back section of Les' book, I think under troubleshooting.
There are also many posts on this subject you can find using the search function. My PU would "wander" a lot and was quite dangerous with the loose steering. I found the tires were toed out instead of toed in, causing the "wander" phenomenon. I figured that out from previous posts on the subject.
Welcome to the forum!

The "in-out " play adjustment can be done easily in the car, actually all the adjustments can be done, the service bulletins have a good article on how.

I have had mine out 2 times, the gear out the bottom, the tube, light rod and wheel out the top, it took 2 people, i might have removed the starter, but never the pedals

... follow the directions in Les Andrews book...
There are very precise instructions there for pulling it out thru the cabin and also underneath the vehicle. First time I did mine I couldn't get the steering wheel off, so it came out thru the cab.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to try to adjust it first. I'll let you know how it goes.
