Steering box rebuild question

Hi to all
we are removing the steering box on a 1956 Ford Victoria and want to confirm that the the entire steering shaft, not the outter column, the entire shaft itself which is quite long,
that it should remain attached to the steering box when we send the box in for rebuild.
I spoke to a rebuilder this AM and he stated that on some cars the entire long shaft stays attached to the box and that the 56 Victoria is one of them and I would have to send the complete setup in, box and shaft, for them to rebuild.
I am guessing as I am not with the car at the moment but that shaft is approx 4 ft.....I presume this rebuilder knows what he is taliking about but I want to see what the Fordbarn group thinks....thanks,John in CT

The worm gear is pressed on to the steering shaft and would require special equipment to remove the gear and install a new one. You can buy a new shaft with the gear on it, as well as the other rebuild parts - which I did.

There is also a "pin" in the steering box of about 1/4" dia. steel that has factory mushroom heads on both ends to keep it in place. You have to cut or grind off one end to remove it (and of course it is then too short to reuse). The new rebuild parts pin has no heads on it and you can't duplicate the factory heads at home. You have to use a welder to create heads on both ends.

If I had to do it again, I think I'd spend the extra money and have it done.

I recently discovered I could not remove the steering box as well (i was going to paint it). In the process of learning this I took a plate off and lost some gear oil. Can some one tell me if one of the two screws on top is for filling? The big one looks like a back lash adjustment, is it also used to fill it with gear oil?
