Steering box questions

So it appears that the 37 - 39 use only 2 bolts & mounts over that plate I have. However I still can't find that part available with any of the vendors so I will have to get it used I think.

Which parts are you looking for?

Plate & Tube 78 3597 B (37-39)
Bracket 78 3569 (37-39)
Spring B 3642 (28-39)
Spider B 3643 (28-39)
Retainer B 3644 (28-39)
Switch Rod 78-3616-A (35-39)

Per the thread I referenced, that part is not currently reproduced but the earlier model (which is) can be modified to work. I also checked ebay and a NOS one recently sold for $6.60.

So what year is this spare steering box that I have ? A 1942 ? The numbers appear to be 21A 3559 D . I'm trying to rebuild one for my 36.

Well, the Green Book listing is interesting. 3559 is listed as a shim. The housing is listed as 21A 3548-A and is common for 37 thru 1948.

After looking at the casting numbers again, I think it's either a 3558 or 3550- D 2

I'm going to order a CD version of the Green Book tonight, so I can find these numbers. Looks like a good reference. So if I understand right, a 21A 3548-A will work in my 36 with a correct bracket or re-drill, and a 36 steering shaft.

I have lots of early Ford steering box parts, so PM me if you need anything specific.

Neal

Neal I sent you a couple of PM's

I need the switch body housing mount 78-3569 for the 37 to 39 cars. Do you have any of them?

Daryl

PS (thanks for pointing out my error in the description JSeery)

Are you looking for the housing or the housing mount? The housings are readily available, it's the mount that's not reproduced.

A lot of the casting numbers are just for the bare casting. Many of these numbers were never published in the parts catalogs since a few other processes made them into the final "assembly" part number that they ended up with.
