Steering box housing gasket?

Apparently a gasket is not needed between the housing and the steering sector shaft cover? This doesn’t seem right, please correct me and guide me to the info. Thanks

The gasket is all that stands between those two castings and a steady oil leak. You will need it.

Yes, there is a gasket.

Do not put any gasket sealer on it, because you are anticipating that it will leak. The sector housing has to be able to slide and move to adjust it after assembly.

Instead of sealer, put a light coat of grease on both sides of the gasket. That will allow it to slide when required, and will help seal when you tighten the bolts.

Hi, do you mean the cork o ring? And do you mean to say no gasket just grease?
Sorry I’m confused.

There is a recess in the gear box for the cork gasket to sit in. When the sector housing is tightened against the gear box, this cork ring gasket is compressed and supposedly keeps steering lube from leaking. Supposed to, but doesn't. Be prepared for drippage no matter what you do. It helps to coat the four studs that screw into the gear box with sealant or the lube will work its way past the threads and contribute to leakage. I thicken the 600w lube with STP Oil Treatment in a 50-50 ratio. The thicker lube still clings to the gears, but will resist running out as easily as straight 600w alone.

Hi, do you mean the o gasket? Or is there a second gasket? Thanks

Put grease on the o-shaped cork gasket, so that the housing can slide to adjust.

Or, I like the idea of a big o-ring. I've never done that, but it makes sense. Wipe some grease on it so that the housing will move when you need it to.

Yes, non-hardening sealant on the threads is a good idea. Not RTV, something more like Permatex #2.

And if it will fit in the steering shaft and the horn rod will go through it, put the flat plate in the bottom with the tube that goes up high, above the oil level in the gear box.

They also sell an o-ring and a thin washer kit to put on the sector shaft next to the frame just before you bolt the box to the frame. Again, I have not used one yet, but it looks like a good idea.

Hope that helps.

I believe I understand and I’m thankful for the help. I can’t help wondering Of the possibility of a home made paper or other gasket material, thin I would think but able to fill imperfections. Just a thought and I might spend a bit of time thinking about it. You know the first electric chair probably didn’t work that great. Just a thought, just a thought.
