1930 tudor it will not start with the starter but if pushed about a foot it will roll start ... this thing will drive me crazy has never done this before,,, always started fine.. points set,, and timing set what next

Does it start with the hand crank ?

So, did this problem just 'start' when the new starter was installed ? If so, install the old starter and see what happens.

I'm wondering if the new starter has too much draw.

Have you tried adding a jumper battery ?

You could have high resistance in the primary ignition circuit. IE. Switch or junction box connections, Starter mounted fuse etc... Robbing the circuit of power when u use the starter
Of course check the basics when it won't start spark etc.. See what ur missin

ok the starter has been on for about a month and has started fine, problem just started today tried to hand crank and i could'nt start it

ok just went outside and it sarted up fine twice after it warmed up it will not start again

next thing after you hold the starter button down for a while and then let off off of it, the engine seems to be spitting and run back wards for a second

What shape is the battery in? Terminals on the battery, plus the ground on the frame. Two times in the year batteries go bad, winter and summer! Big Hammer :-)

OK, so it sounds what you really have is a "hot start" problem.

Common causes:
1. Too much fuel, so it's flooding. Check you carb float level, close the GAV some.
2. Bad ignition condenser, so no spark.
3. Some other loose or corroded electrical connection in the ignition circuit (mentioned already by Mitch) that gets worse when hot.

Good luck finding it. Be systematic.

"next thing after you hold the starter button down for a while and then let off off of it, the engine seems to be spitting and run back wards for a second"

too advanced

OK, no offense meant here... you are moving the spark lever fully up when starting, right?
Also, check to be sure the spark lever linkage is operating the distributor plate properly as well.
Just a thought. Lots of great ideas already mentioned so far.

ok friends no change
new cables oooo cage
new batt
new starter
new alt.
new ign. switch
set timing
new points set right wire not touching
new plugs gaped correct
all new parts have been on the car before the problem started , this thing will not start with the starter, roll it off and runs great idles great cruise thru town today got it up to 54mph with no issues, came home cut it off spins over so fast it will shake the car,((( BUT IT WILL NOT START !!!!!!!!!! it has always started great as soon as you could bump the starter it would fire and now nothing

from what u said before it is too advance4d.

need an in-line spark tester or a clear dizzy cap.

You are replacing stuff without using any diagnostics, so you do not really know what component is at fault

If you can roll it and get it to start all the ignition parts are working, the fuel is working, the engine is working. The only thing left that is different if the draw on the battery form the starter. Believe it or not new batteries can be bad. Put a meter on it and measure the voltage when cranking.

I did not see new ignition condenser in that list. New condensers are often bad right out of the box, or don't last long. It will drive you nuts.

I am also not clear if it will start with the starter motor when cold but not when hot, or will not start with the starter motor at all, ever.

Are you using one of those fuses mounted on the starter?

6 volt system? If so, every connection must be clean and tight. Check ground strap to frame for clean metal to metal. Check inside terminal box for loose nut.

Do you use any kind of cut-off switch on the battery? If too much voltage drop through there, not enough volts for spark. As suggested above, get a volt meter and start taking readings everywhere while cranking, especially at the coil. Write them all down. Be systematic.

Share results.

The fuse holder installed on the starter can go bad, also the screws can short out that attach the fuse to the side of the original starter switch.
Try the install with the fuse holder removed and the original length screws to attach the original starter switch.
From here I can't see if you have a fuse holder.

ok just hooked up jumper cables and it starts as soon as you bump the starter, thats 12 volt to 6 volt jump ,, could be a bad new battery it just aint spinning fast enough
