Starting my 221 build

Since I'm done with the clean up, it's time to prep for paint.
I also chased all the threads one more time as their was some rust spots in the threads after everything dried out.

take a look between the cyl walls and outside of block. Stuff really packs in there. I use a real long 3/16" drill bit in a drill to break it loose.

See the shiney metal in the bolt holes. You enlarged the holes, removing material. Be sure to use a good thread sealer, as your studs will be a little loose. How much was taken when you had it decked? What cam you using?

Just what I found in my engine, # 3 and # 4.
Do you think it's okay to break it loose, or would it do more harm than good? I'm afraid I mess it up.

Felix37, I apologize that I step in here.

Russ, Thanks for the advice! I will definitely do that. Russ, not sure how much was taken off, I just asked them to surface it, probably not much. my cam is a Isky max 1.

Yes,loosen it up. You can also use a coat hanger wire to loosen it up.
I'm assuming the motor is out of the car.

Just so all you guys can feel better, here is the way my engine is mounted. The stand you see in the earlier pics were taken a few months ago and used only while I was cleaning the bare block and painting. I fabricated a side mount for the actual building of the motor.

Nice work.

My block was the same in the water jackets after tanking so I blocked off the water pump holes and added a 4:1 mix of water to molasses and filled the water jackets with it to the decks and let it sit for a week or so.

Dissolved all the rust, washed it out and was spotless inside there, no rust at all. Water jackets were silver after this - no rust scale left.

Motor ALWAYS runs cool, even at 3 5/16" + .030"

Just a thought.....

What size are your main bearings (1938 base diameter 2.4 inches or 1939 base diameter 2.5 inches)?
Does your crankshaft have a "short snout" for the 32-38 crank pulley?

The build is looking good. Please keep posting pictures.

It's the 39 base 2.5. I'm not sure if it's a short snout crank, I cam measure it though. yes, I need to post a bunch of pics!

Keep it up! I hope I will be doing this samething to my 221 after it is no longer 0 degrees here in Chicago.

I will be watching this thread with a lot of interest. :)
