Starting a new engine

Well it's not really new. I took it out painted it all up and reinstalled it. What would you look for if it won't fire up.
I did install a petronic ignition. It doesnt seem to be pumping gas to thecarb. Could the rod in the mechanical pump not be hitting the pump arm? It is a 40 ford withe a 51-53 flatty.
Thanks

Did it ever run?
Where is the rotor - did you forget to install after the Pertronix change out?
Does it act like it wants to start - backfire...
Ok, it is back to the basics.
What did you do besides paint it? New plugs along with the ignition upgrade?
Gas in the tank, new filter, is there something blocking the fuel line prior to the pump?
Is the distributor installed correctly?
Spark at the plugs
Fuel in the carb bowl
firing order correct?
Does it have compression?
Did you try starting fluid?

It's outa Gas

some times when a car sets the gas line from the tank to the fuel pump runs out of gas and the pump wont pick up fuel because its lost its prime, put an air jet nozzle in the fill pipe for the tank, plug around it with rags, give a couple short burst of air in the tank to force the fuel up to the pump to prime it, not to much pressure, just enought to get the fuel thru the line to the pump, of course this is an excerise in futility if there is no gas in the tank, never take anything for granted, put a couple gallons in the tank just to be sure
