Starters, again

Rebuilding a 41 flathead. I am down to the starter. When I took the thing off the car, it "sprang" apart........?/
Is it spring loaded somehow? Do I compress it together before installing it? I think I am going to have it rebuilt before I put it back in, I perfer original parts. Or, are the after market starters out there ( Macs, Speedway, etc. ) have good starters? I am also keeping it 6v, not changing the system to 12v.

Any help will help, thanks.

The 2 screws that hold the starter to the engine also hold the starter together. What all "sprang" apart? Pics are always good.

You let the armature come out and the brushes moved toward the center. Inspect the brushes, clean the armature and test it and put 'er back to together.

You'll have to compress the brushes back up into their pockets before you can slide the armature back into place. Make sure the housing is aligned with the notches in the end plates. Release the brushes so they can ride on the commutator again. Put the thru bolts backin place. Keep the entire assy held together with both hands as you reinstall the starter. Thread the thru bolts into their spots and tighten up. The upper bolt should have a small bracket at the head of the bolt, which is attached to a nearby oil pan bolt for extra support.

Thanks for the information. I plan on having the thing rebuilt, that should put everything back into place I would think.
On the other hand, has anyone had any good or bad luck with the 6V starters from MACS? Or other suppliers?

I have one of the new style ones, works ok but sounds different than original.

We sell the same starters. The "barrel" type drive is problematic. Often, it won't fit thru the opening in the bell housing. If it fails (the drive mechanism) you basically have to replace the whole drive. We offer the starter (which works fine by the way) with a USA made bendix drive....just like the original. It's more money, but the starter fits and works!

Here's the link to our starters;

We had one of the new style starters fail on the Maine Tour last year. A retaining ring came off allowing the barrel mechanism to come apart. We were able to repair it and it work OK after that, but the design is problamatic. I would stay with the old style Bendix drive.
