have a problem with my starter, (8ba) it drags like the battery is low, but its not. all connections are clean, went bad overnite. was rebuilt a couple years back. any ideas? thanks.

Batteries can go bad quickly like that. Have the battery tested and/or try another known good battery. Recheck all those connections again, including cleaning the battery posts and terminals before removing the starter to check that for internal drag due to armature/field stack rub. Also check brushes (length) and commutator condition.

thanks! i know the batt. is good, also inspected and cleaned all connections, guess it needs to come out.

Hi there, You need to load test the battery with a proper battery load tester by applying a 300 amp load to it. Just checking with a voltmeter or hydrometer is not a decisive test. If it passes the load test you can look to the starter or connections. But clear the battery condition correctly first. Regards, Kevin.

A starter with badly worn armature bushings will drag the armature into the pole shoes, making it slow. Also, be sure the face of the starter, and the place on the clutch housing where it fit, is clean so the ground is good. I always run a secondary cable with two eyelets between one of the starter mounting bolts and the battery ground strap. A 12 volt cable is OK for that purpose. A starter requires several hundred amps, so all connections must be lean and tight.

Also, make sure you have the little angle bracket that fastens to the rear of the starter and to one of the oil pan bolts. This bracket stabilizes the back of the starter and provides another ground path.

I recently had a starter that was slow to crank and the
problem seemed to be at the internal connection of the copper stud
that the cable bolts to. It would spin faster sometimes when I loosened the connection.??
Have not opened it up , just put on a spare starter and what a difference.
