Starter wows, new starter assembly

How do I release the bendex gear so it threads back against the coil spring on my Y block starter? It's a 1961 Galaxie 292 starter assembly. I was screw'n with it and turned the bendex gear toward the starter housing and now it won't return to the coil spring. First time Ford project and I'm having a ball get'n this thing going. Thanks for your time, Doug.

You can install it that way if there is room with the gear kicked out. When the engine starts after cranking it over, the flywheel will kick it back in place.

If you can't get the starter back in as mentioned you can try this if you have access to a bench grinder with a wire wheel. Hold the bendix against the wire wheel and spin it up until the bendix kicks back in. Guys have been doing that for years.

So all is not lost. Thanks guys, I'm going to try both ways so maybe some day I can pass the word and sound like I know what I'm talking about. All part of my learning curve.

FYI. I took my starter in to an independent re-builder in about 2001. He ordered a new spring for the Bendix. It came wound the wrong direction, so he ordered another. It was the same as the first. For some unknown reason, the replacement parts system was filled with parts meant for opposite turning starters. Maybe for boat engines? It took an extra week to get the correct spring, but the starter has been fine since.
