Starter Whirl

Twice today on starting the starter engaged, engine did not catch but starter whirled until rapped with mallet? Cause?

The starter switch is sticking closed. Sometimes this is due to poor repro switch rod alignment, and sometimes it's caused by the contacts welding together.

See if you can move the rod freely. If you can, then you may need a better switch.

To add to what Tom said the repro contact is thinner than the original and does not have the same "spring" to remove the metal from the contact point on the starter.

Thank ou solved problem with original switch from 28 special coupe I am restoring but the problem will re arise when its time to replace it in the coupe.
