What is the difference between the 49 - 50 push button start and the 51 - 53 key start solenoid and are they interchangeable And now for the dumb question of the day what's the little button on the solenoid for A big thank you to those that take the time to reply Thanks Ray

'37-50 requires the small terminal to be grounded to actuate, '51 through much later requires actuation from the hot side of circuit. Little button moves the solenoid plunger by hand, allowing you to rotate the engine and/or run yourself over from under the hood.

The button on the solenoid can stick sometimes which prevents the solenoid from actuating. So if you have an issue like the starter not turning when you hit the start button on the dash, then check the solenoid button. Be sure the car is not in gear when you push the button!

If it's an operable button that little button allows you to start the car when you are working under the hood. Like a remote starter.
It's neat feature since you can "turn the engine over" without having to sit in the car.
Sometimes you see solenoids that look like they have a button on the bottom but it's not operable- doesn't do anything. It was a nice feature on the early Fords.
looks like this:

Here's one that looks like it might have an operable button, but the button is just a raised dimple in the metal.
