right now im using the original 6v solenoid but im sure its going to fry ,that napa st 56 looks like the way to go.. great site thanks guys al
Use your stock 6V starter relay. It will be fine. I like the button on the bottom to bump the engine from the engine compartment too.
If you switch to a 12V starter relay & wish to retain a push-button starter switch, you'll have to do one of three things (in rough order of complexity):
A) use a harder-to-find, slightly more expensive, isolated 12V starter relay that operates with the original push-button [Pro: no changes, Con: hard to find starter relay]
B) switch to a two-post push-button to send 12V to a common Ford 12V starter relay from just about any Ford product and available nearly everywhere [Pro: very easy to find starter relay available anywhere for a few bucks, Con: rewiring for 12V circuit from push-button]
C) use the original push-button switch to complete a ground to a 12V cube relay that completes a 12V circuit to the starter relay [Pro: very easy to find starter relay available anywhere, Con: more complex wiring just to use original push-button]
For the time, aggravation, and money, I much, much prefer to use the original 6V starter relay, all original wiring, don't change a thing, and run it on 12V. Starter relays are momentary-use items and don't suffer from overheating on 12V like continuous use items like an overdrive solenoid (for example). If you crank and crank and crank your car, it may stick, but so will a stock 12V one or 6V one - fix the problem with your car not starting, don't rewire your car!
