Starter rod finish

I have searched through the JG's for the original finish of the starter rod and found nothing. I sure wish there was a searchable Judging Guidelines somewhere to more easily find things. I also searched Fordbarn for the same thing and found nothing. I think the starter rod is cad plated, but not sure. Does anyone know the finish on the starter rod?

Thanks, Pat. I never thought to look in the electrical section. I suspected the rod was cad plated, but wasn't sure. I sure wish there was a searchable version of the JG's so I could find things easier.

I wish there were photographs of every externally visible part. Yes, that would be thousands of photos (presumably in a searchable database), but hobbyists would contribute in a community way, like in this forum. It would fill up quickly. Of course every photo would have to be vetted eventually.

I have suggested the same thing at times in the past.

My idea would be to have a website specific to the JS and according to the Part Price Lists and Body Parts List showing the parts in photos in their original or restored condition. That way photos, "thousands of photos", could be added at leasure to enhance the hobby.

But just who would "goveren" or "be in charge" with such a site? That is the question...plus some others I can not think of right at the moment.

Yes, exactly!

I could see multiple levels of administrative oversight. The top levels would be occupied by MARC and MAFCA Judging Standards Board of Directors, followed by senior judges, lower judges, and finally the hobbyist community at large.

Input from a guy like me would be given zero validity, but might bubble up to full judging standard status after vetting by higher life forms.

Yea, right. Who would provide those "thousands of photos"? Think about it. Go through every photo ever posted on Fordbarn and Ahooga. How many are usable for the purpose described? Look closely at just who provided those photos. Now add to that all the personal web sites with applicable photos and information. Who provides those and over how many years?

A handful of folks do 90% of the "work". What makes you think that will change? Some how things will magically be different? In reality you will have people just sitting around "at leisure" waiting for that exact same handful of folks to do even more. It ain't going to happen!

The same applies to the Judging Standards.

As I said in the other post I have already set up a web site for this. And no it did not fill up quickly. In fact I was just about the only one who put up any photos. It is set up as a Wiki so it is a community run web site. Right now I am the owner and am the final judge of what can stay. But with a Wiki that can be changed. A Wiki is the ideal way to do this but it does require contributions from many people. As Marco said many would like to use it but VERY FEW are willing to contribute.

I'll venture a few guesses at why the site didn't fly.

1. It wasn't promoted by the national clubs.
2. There was no clear payoff for contributors.

IMHO, a well-promoted website for Model A documentation would eventually fill up with quality photos. It's true that only a small percentage of users would submit content. Actually, that is true of every organization, club, association, or company. In every case, a small core group does all the work, and everybody else benefits. But you'll still get the occasional upload from guys doing restorations. Eventually every Model A part would be represented and available for reference and judging. And of course every photo would need to be vetted. But this has to start with MARC and MAFCA to be successful. This is one good way for them to solicit input from the Model A community.

I know I'm in over my head... I've only been in the hobby for two years, and only read the RG&JS twice, but I read every word of it, and it just occurred to me that it could use more photographs to illustrate paint and plating, and the various changes from month to month and year to year.

Just consider this "newbie" input from somebody interested in getting deeper into the hobby. :) Didn't try to make waves...
