Starter Question

I have a starter that when hooked up to a 6V battery charger/starter spins slowly then trips the circuit breaker in the charger/starter. Is it a bad connection with the clips or possibly a short in the starter. Opinions/advice.

It sounds to me like its time to take it to a qualified rebuilder and have him make it new again. Find a guy who works on a lot of tractors, he should be familiar with an old Ford starter.

It may very well need an overhaul but if I had a battery available I would like to try that first. Most charger/starters just do not have amps needed to spin a starter well. If you do not charge up your battery a little, when you are trying to jump it it generally will not spin the starter right away, 20 minutes later it will do well, so I would just try it with a battery before I spent the money

They are not hard to do . You should be able to get a rebuild kit . Mostly likely the brushes are worn down , oil and dirk make a mess in them too . If you are mechanically inclined , then you can rebuild them . They really aren't that bad at all .
If you are not sure you can do it , then get someone to rebuild it for you or trade it in for a rebuild one . Even Auto Zone or a good parts store can get you a starter . If not a catalog company can get one on line .
