starter question

I picked up a starter that has 292 written on it. I assume it is from a Y-block. I compared it to the one I have here from an 8BA and it is similar in overall size. Will the Y-block starter work on a flathead?

Thanks.

I think the starter that I picked up may say 292 on it but don't think that is what it is. I am going to take another look but I think it is for the earlier flathead.

Interesting read from your links. I will go back and read it again. I have done the switch of the fields on generators but had not done it to a starter.

Thanks again.

Here are pictures of the two that I am working with. It looks to me that the black one that came off of an 8BA is an early style and the one that has 292 on it is from an 8BA. So conclusion is, both of mine are flathead starters.

What I have does not look like a y-block starter. In the end a good deal since I did not want one. ;)

Thank you all for the information.

I converted my 8BA starter to 12V by taking the field windings out of a "Y" block starter and putting them in the 8BA. The armature windings are identical but the 8BA shaft is longer. Works great.
