starter pushrod grommet

I am wanting to install the grommet and metal cover for the starter pushrod but on my 31 roadster but it's not clear to me. Does it screw in , rivet in ? Is it inside , outside the firewall ? My firewall has but one larger diameter hole with no smaller holes for mounting the cover. Can anyone advise?

It is riveted in on mine. I too want to replace it but doesn't appear to be an easy way other than to drill out the rivet and replace with nut and bolt.

The grommet is inside the metal cover that is rivited to the firewall. Replacement kits are available but come with screws and nuts instead of rivits.

Acording to my referance, June thirty thru november thirty did not use the metal cover. The metal cover that was used from late thirty thru thirty one was riveted on the engine side of the firewall with three rivets. Many things could have been changed over the past 80 years. the cowl or firewall could have been replaced with a late 30 part. Your car may be a late 30 instead of a 31 or Ford could have been using up left over 30 parts . I have two with the round starter grommet with no metal cover and no rivet holes. one is an august 30 and the other has matching numbers that indicate may 31.

If you are carefull (and patient) with a cotter pin puller or an icepick, you can dig the old one out, the new one will be soft enough, and with a little soap, I changed mine without cutting out the rivets.
