Starter problems?

My 29 Tudor has been starting fine until yesterday. I started it, ran it for a while, turned it off, tried to start it again, and absolutely nothing. I checked the battery and I have 6.24 volts both at the battery and at the starter. I removed the starter switch, cleaned the contact button etc. put it back together, and still nothing. What should I check next? I put new battery cables (2/0) on a few months ago and the battery was new when I bought the car in April of this year. Thanks for your help, Bill

If it's an original starter switch the piece up under the metal tab may have broken off. That's what happened to mine. Everything looked fine, but the bolt was so worn where the shaft comes through the switch it has broken and even though it all looked fine it wasn't making contact when pushing it down from inside. I ordered a new switch and things have been fine since!

See if you can turn the engine by hand, if not the starter gear may be jammed with the flywheel. If so, loosen the starter and rock the car in 3rd gear.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try to crank by hand, but I could hardly turn the crank! I'll loosen the starter tomorrow, rock the car in third, and if that doesn't work I'll order a new switch. Does a new switch come with the screws and gasket, or should I order them also. When I removed the switch to check and clean it, there was no gasket and only three screws. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks, Bill

Bench test your starter once its off.

How hard is it to manually turn the engine over?

Maybe take your old switch and open it up, it might be fixable. After market switches sometimes need to be adjusted anyway.

Just a few things to check. Best of luck.

Before removing anything just put it in high gear and push it forward to unjam the drive. At least that sounds like the problem. If you remove the starter then check the armature shaft for being bent and check the gear teeth on the drive and flywheel.

Thanks for the replies. I have tried cranking it by hand, but it was very hard for me to turn the crank. I have never cranked one before so I don't know how much resistance I should experience as I turn it. I also put the transmission in third year and pushed it forward with no positive results. I even pushed it back while in third gear and still no luck. I think I will order a new starter switch from Snyders and try that before I pull the stater. I will also check the brushes before I place the order. If that does not solve my problem I will pull the starter and go from there. Thanks for your suggestions.
