Starter Problems

I have a '28 AR open cab pick-up. Recently I had the rear portion of the spring break off my bendix. I bought a new spring from Brattons and installed it but the rear bolt came loose, I did use new washers. After experiencing the joy of retrieving scrape metal from the flywheel housing I installed a new bendix of the old style. I ascertained that the spring was larger than the original (2" diameter versus original 1 3/4") which caused the spring to restrict the revolution of the flywheel behind the gear. I tried a 'new style' bendix but it was even larger (2 1/8") and had the same effect of binding the engine.

I have a larger shaft starter with 5/16" bolts. I have owned the car for over forty years and to my knowledge this is the original starter. For the moment I crank it manually or find an incline to park on. Any suggestions as to what to do next? I am already $60-70.00 into this problem and am reluctant to trying a new starter based on my past three purchases.

The early Bendix spring needs a special clip under each end coil of the spring. Later springs have the last half turn made with a reduced diameter and don't need the spring. See Bratton's catalog for the parts, or Bert's may have a good original part for you.

We'll need to know if you have a single plate clutch, or a multiplate clutch. On the multiplate clutch the inspection cover is wider than it is tall. On the single plate clutch the inspection cover is taller than it is wide. Also the clutch and brake shaft is only 3/4" diameter on the multiplate.
