I started my 1931 Victoria for the first time in 3 months and the starter pedal stuck down. I had to reach down and raise it to stop it from turning over. Any thoughts.
Check for binding. Also, the switch can have a weak lever. The rod pushes the lever down and if it is weak it may not push back up. Some reproduction switches have a weak lever. People have put small pieces of soft rubber under the spring to help it return up.
When I went through and put a new starter rod and seal on the on the rod it was tight enough to not allow the starter rod to return. I added a small coil spring between the floor and the disc on the top of rod. As it wears I will remove spring at some point, but it worked excellent. If you haven't changed anything then ya need to do some investigating, not much to it, rod, seal, and switch on starter. Hanging starter is a bad deal.
You are lucky it came back up when you pulled on the starter rod. I have seen the contacts stick together, then your only recourse is the disconnect the battery. This is where it is have a battery disconnect switch. I put a small piece of vacuum hose under the moveable contact to act as a spring, similar to what Neil suggested in post #2.
