Starter jams in and keeps turning.

Every now and then my starter will engage and stay engaged spinning the engine over.
I had it retarded at the time but had been starting it up a fair bit before checking other stuff.
Only way i could stop it was to put it in gear and let the clutch out quickly staling the engine i suppose.
Before when it used to happen i had a on off switch on the floor that i could quickly turn the power to the stater off but i have removed this a while back.
The starter does have the newer end on it.

When you disconnected the battery with the disconnect switch, and the starter disconnected, then I am with sea slug. Repair the starter switch or replace it! I will bet your starter switch is a repop :-(

Sometimes, a poorly charged battery can cause excessive arcing of the starter switch contacts, & "weld" them together & it goes, RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, until you struggle & remove a battery cable!

What Mitch said!

I've seen repro switches with the push rod coming out of the housing at the wrong angle, and that will make it bind of the floorboard and switch housing hole.

you have a high spot on either the brass button on the starter or the brass strip on the switch. it's making contact on the high spot and putting so much electricity through it that it's welding it together. Sand both down with sandpaper and you should be good to go.
