Starter Issue

Last week the car struggled to start and this week nothing with the starter. Checked the battery and it is 100% charged. Checked the cables and made sure they were clean and tight, still nothing from the starter. Before I invest into a starter where else might I look. Car is totally as born

Bendix gear hung up on the ring gear of the flywheel - seized. Put the transmission in high gear and rock the car back and forth. You will hear a 'click' sound when hang up is released...

It is always good to check your battery voltage with a load on it. If u have solenoid with the button on bottom, put a volt meter on battery & push the button Be sure car is in neutral .

Solenoid. Or starter . Possible battery , even with full charge . Need to load test the battery to eliminate it .

I would also check for a clean ground where the starter mounts to the pan, and also the little support bracket to the oil pan.

i recently purchased brand new 6v battery that turned the engine over, reluctantly, once or twice and then click. turned out all the cables connected to the battery were undersized, as well as the one from the motor to ground and the wire from the solenoid to the starter motor. and the ground from the battery to the firewall and from the motor to the firewall were very poor due to excessive amount of paint and metal oxidation.

i'm just now, after about two weeks, about finished with fixing all of them and the engine is now turning over as it should. or at least as a 6v starting system should be expected to. and so can understand why someone with a similar experience might be tempted to look into switching over to a 12v system. but it has its drawbacks too... :)

Not interested in changing to 12v. All the cables are the proper size and never had a problem until the last 2 weeks. What would cause the bendix to hang up?
Is that something that will occur often now that it may have started doing that. Will work on the car tomorrow as we have company today besides my grandson wants to be here whenever I work on the car. Thank you all for the suggestions

you might want to remove all the spark plugs and test again. it will reveal whether the problem is load dependent or not.

my starting system had no problem whatsoever turning the engine over when the plugs were removed. if it had, i might have suspected the bendix or starter.

Did a load test and the battery is good. Tried rocking the car in gear and that did nothing. Can you test the starter switch with a multi meter? If that checks out only thing left is the starter.

At work we used to whack the starter with a hammer while somebody tried to crank it. Usually that got one more crank out of it. If it cranked, that told you the pronlem was in the starter. It can still be the starter if it doesn't crank. When the hammer didn't test didn't work, we did a "voltage drop test", this will find the problem. You just need a good voltmeter. This will tell you exactly where the problem is in the circuit, a cable, a switch, the starter, there are YouTube videos showing you how to do this. 99 times out of 100 it's the starter but on weird problems the voltage drop test will find where the resistance in the circuit is located.

One time I had a brand-new vehicle with an intermittent starting problem, sometimes it cranked other times nothing, like it didn't even have a battery in it. The voltage drop test found the problem. I put the meters leads on "both ends" of the starter cable and cranked it. It should have read "zero volts" while I was attempting to crank it, but it read 12v, that can't be or can it. It seems when they put the battery cable end on the cable they didn't strip off the insulation. Sometimes it made the connection and sometimes it didn't. A brand-new car with a brand-new cable. The voltage drop test was the only way I found it.

It was the starter. Bendix was really jammed. I broke the cover plate. Is there any where to get another so I can get starter rebuilt
