Starter installation

How do you install the starter, and hold everything together?

i must have been lucky when re-installing my original starter as it didn't appear to want to fall into three separate pieces, although it could have, if i understand how its assembled.

but what did help, enormously, was noticing the small bracket attached to a oil pan bolt that one of the starter's attachment bolts coulda/woulda routed through and hold the starter up close to its installation point. here's one on e-bay:

IIRC, on at least some of the starters I have worked on, the end piece closest to the Bendix end has it's holes threaded and held the starter loosely together.

Don't leave that bracket off. Torque of the starter will trash the bendix spring.
use zip tie or rubber band to hold it together if you need to. Chap
