starter gear not retracting all the way

seems the starter gear on my 47 ford truck is not retracting fully and dings on the flywheel on and off while running
i can manually turn it back and get about a 1/8" gap between the flywheel and starter gear, but on its own it goes about half that distance

i should also mention that i am running a flat-o-matic c4 ****** set up,
dont know if that matters

looking for info on what to check/test/replace

thanks

Stock starter? If it is. The easiest fix is to replace the starter drive. Otherwise you can take the drive apart and explore. There are 2 spring loaded pins that provide friction between the gear and the drive spiral. These are most likely worn and allowing the gear to bounce back.

If you do decide to play with the drive. There are two of the spring loaded pin/buttons in the gear cap. Note that one of the pins rides on the top of a spiral thread with a recess at the end. One of the pin/buttons must go back on this thread. If it does not get put back on this thread the drive may disengage before the engine starts. I have a drive I can take apart and shoot pictures of if you need me to. PM me if you want that done.

My starter had this problem, went back to the starter pile... Found a spring with a bit less use- it was shorter, kept the drive gear from the ring gear...

Make sure you don't have an 8BA flywheel on a 59AB engine. If so the ring gear sets back about 3/8" and the starter drive gear will not quite go back far enough to clear the wheel gear. Walt

On the Flatomatic some how get it back for clearance retro fit it.
Stock drives from back like stock starter.
What I have is the mini starter it comes in from front. But it 12 volts.
When the flex plate is shimmed out,the starter needs the same.
