starter drive

Can I replace the small spring that hold the starter gear away flywheel or should I just replace the whole starter drive my 1950 226 ci ford

Those pinion return springs are very soft. Watts wrong with yours? All the thirties drives did not have that return spring and they worked fine. Make sure the spiral area is free from crud or rust so that the pinion works back and forth freely. I very lightly give it a squirt with pressure pack oil. Not WD 40. Regards, Kevin.

I had that same problem with my 1950 cpe v8 it was a problem that they had back then sometimes you could rock it back and forth in gear of course the key must be off and it would unlock itself but i still replaced it with a new nos their out there I got mine from South side obsolete out of minn he has a small website hope this helps
