Starter drive repair question

I have 5 of the Folo-Thru Bendix Drive Bendix starter drives that fit Ford Y-Block engines. They don't work as the pinion and barrel end with the gear (that engages the flywheel) does not spring back after engine starts.

I would like to take them apart and repair them, if possible. However, I was told that these type Bendix drives must not be disassembled and that the entire unit must be replaced.

Does anyone know if these type starter drives can be repaired rather than replaced? Seems like a waste to throw away 5 of these items. Here's the link:

Thanks, JIM

Hi Jim,

I like the original type having one of the new ones with the closed can like you picture but not exactly the same.

It looks like there are tabs on the metal barrel that lock it with no way to pry or push the tabs back out to flush with the barrel. You may have to tack weld a bolt to each so you can pull them back out. Not having one in hand, there may be more to it.
