Starter Drive interchage

If you're referring to the "Modern" bendix sold by the vendors, I would keep walking. They do not engage fully in the teeth on the ring gear so down the track a bit, you will have trouble. I have thrown away a couple of those and used the WAY better original style ones.
If you're alking about one of the high torque geared starters, I have not heard any bad reports about them but I know very few people who have one. Others may have more informed advice on those.

I have had a different experience than Synchro. My modern Bendix works well. However there are several out there and some are better quality than others.

The Ford tractor Bendix will not work on a Model A. These are designed to lock into the engaged position until the engine starts. The only way to disengage the Bendix is to mount it on a spindle and wind it up to a high rpm with a drill motor.

I just use the last version that was for V8 — that and a new ring gear and it’s been great for 40 years so far and I have even used the starter to move the car and start it in gear when the clutch was stuck.
If the ring gear is worn every starter drive has problems when the engine stops at the damaged spot.

You can also hold the drive gear against a wire wheel on a bench grinder to spin it back into place. It always takes me two tries because I try to spin it the wrong way the first time.I just have to flip the starter and then spin it the right direction.I was probably 16 or so when the starter shop guy showed me how to do that.I don't know about now,but a few years ago the aftermarket Ford tractor drives were trash.
