Starter brush install

I recently took apart my starter and cleaned the brushes. I had a heck of a time re-installing the 4 brushes.

What are the install tricks that you guys use? There has to be an easier way.

Pull the brushes up high enough out of their brackets so that you can wedge the tension springs against one side of the brushes. This will suspend them up and away from the armature commutator plates. Slide the armature into the end plate past the suspended brushes. Once the armature's snout is seated in its bushing/bearing, release the springs, push the brushes down and then move the spring ends over the tops of the brushes to apply downward tension. Even this procedure is tricky and frustrating. But by the time you have raised the final brush, it will seem easier.

ADDED: I replaced the brushes in a Model A starter last month using this method and it made life a LITTLE easier.

Harbor Freight sells a 4-pack of probes, one is a hook. This is great for holding the brush spring out of the way while you use your other hand to install the brushes.

Thanks Marshall.

I did use the HF picks when I installed the brushes and I did not have any fun.

"Marshall's Method", eh? Ha, ha, ha! I wish I could take credit for this BRILLIANT suggestion, but like most other Model A repair techniques, someone else thought of it first long ago. I'm just one more schmuck passing along a tried-and-true Model A solution to a common problem. But if you insist on calling it Marshall's Method, I want a royalty paid to me for every time someone uses it! :) :) :)
