The gear on the starter bendix that engages the flywheel has a counter balance on it with a couple little pins supported by a small spring. My counter balance and one of the pins has come off. I did a search and found that the counter balance can be tac welded back. I would like to know what those little pins are for. Since they are on the heavy side of the counterbalance I can't see what good they are doing. How about just leaving them off?

I think they are guides to keep things straight when spinning to engage the flywheel I always thought one side was spring loaded, or maybe that was on my A Ford.
