Started Cranking speed to fast

My A has been converted to 12v before I purchased it. The Engine has good compression and runs well.
The problem is that the cranking speed is very very fast. I installed a modern bendix, but I'm afraid that I will chew up the starter or the flywheel when it slams in as the started is engaged.
Not sure if the starter was converted to 12v or if this will make much of a difference with the crank speed. How can I tell ?
I do not want to convert it back to 6v since I have a 12 alternator,halogen headlights,etc,etc
How can I slow down the cranking speed ?????????
Thanks in advanve

Hey Patric,

I don't know the exact answer to your question, but I think you can run that thru something that will reduce the voltage before it gets to the starter. That having been said, I don't think that is necessarily bad on a starter if everything is healthy. Usually they'll take 12V. I haven't done it, but I have friends that have used them that way for a long time. I have a 49 Chevy pickup that is in the same category and it works fine running a 6V starter on 12V. Anyway, if you want to cut it down, any shop should be able to hook you up easily enough, and cheap enough too I would think.

my 31 is 12 volt, also 12 volt starter, still fast but does not have the harsh engagement like the 6 volt had also what I like,I have the adjustable resistor for horn can find the sound you want,

I have 2 A's with 6v starters and a 12v system with high mileage and many many starts with no prblems as wear etc I understand a 6v starter runs cooler on 12v it requires less amperage. Gord, B

Hi Patrick, You can calm the starter down some by installing the 12v field coils offered by some of the supply houses. Please note that this swap will require some mechanical and electrical skills as the field coils are series wound as opposed to parallell windings in the orig. 6 v coils. An external resistor will not work on the starter unless you can find one as large as a loaf of bread! Happy Moltoring!
