Stalls a stoplight

For the last year the car ran fine with a professionally rebuilt Zenith carb. Just this week it has started stalling a stoplights unless I pull the throttle lever down or give a pump on the gas peddle as I come to a stop. I gather it is in the carb, but what should I look for?

You lneed to check the fuel level in the carb bowl. You will have to purchase or make a sight tube that goes into the drain plug. Then, turn on the fuel and see how much you have. Minimum is 5/8th inch below the bottom of the top casting.

Engine dies when vehicle comes to a stop
Common Causes
• Float is set too high or a pin hole absorbs gasoline into float.
• Compensator Jet Orifice contains dirt or rust, or is too small.
• Idling Jet Orifice contains dirt or rust, or is too small.
• Idle Air Adjust Screw is mis-adjusted or too short, collapsing spring before it seats.
• Throttle Idle Adjustment Screw is mis-adjusted.
• Upper Casting Idle Jet Passage is restricted to Idle throat port.

Trash in the gas is always a possible culprit. It doesn't matter how fresh the carb rebuild is if their is debris in the gas. Pull the carb and make sure no jets are clogged.

I had a carb that would do that if the GAV was set to rich. Opening the GAV only about 1/8 turn would make the carb function properly when coming to a stop.

Just take off the carb, take it apart & clean out all the jets. I do mine with an old bicycle pump, but then I can be a Luddite. No matter what the gas quality , cleaning out the carb every now and again is part of the Model A experience.
