Have an annoying squeak coming from the belt/waterpump maybe generator on my 36.Especially bad at idle, have loosened and tightened the belt , it makes no difference, done the screwdriver to the ear trick, no bearing noise.the belt is in good condition but 25yrs old. Havent tried the belt squeak spray stuff yet. Any help appreciated.

Time for the belt dressing spray available from any auto parts store. Works great. I've cured many a belt squeak with it.

possibly the pulley itself might have "build up". Make sure the pulley is clean and free of all debris. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Sometimes I use belt grip,, I save all my old fan belts and take them to napa auto parts to match them up ,,,I always ask myself is $14. worth getting rid of the agrei
vation, in my case YES! gump

Any type of belt dressing is only a short fix bandaid. Either the belt has worn down to the point if bottoming out or the pulley is worn allowing the belt to slip. $.02

If you pull the belt, you can check the rotational feel of each pump and the generator. Check for tweeked edges or uneven wear in the sheaves. Sometimes these old engines will talk to you and tell you how they feel. It might just be the belt but it pays to check everything else too.

A little run out on the pulley seems to create some noise ,I got rid of mine by fitting a V belt with the teeth on the underside

It could be the generator brushes, they can squeak and sound the same as a belt sounds ---with the belt off spin the generator, a commutator brush seating stone will remove the glaze ---also have you oiled the rear bushing??

Been trying to get rid of the squeak in my fan belt on my 36 for months. Spraying wd 40 on the belt would stop the squeak for about a half hour. Tried several other methods but all were short term. Installed a new belt today and the old flathead runs so quiet, I can hardly tell if it's running. Well worth the time and cost.

Every problem has a different solution. We took off the toothed belt as it was squeaky and fitted a plain one , problem gone. The toothed one was new but I think somehow air was getting trapped in the teeth , much like supercharger whine. Changed belts and now noise is gone.
