Spring Spreading Methods UPDATE

Hi all,

So here's my update if anyone cares.

I took the overwhelming advise from my fellow Model A-ers to buy the current tool for the job! I went with the $60 rear spring spreader from Snyders. There was a cheaper one that didn't look safe, and a more expense one that appeared to be the same construction with a luxury or two added. Limited budget, so I went mid level.

The only major flaw with this tool what the muscle behind it. :)

After two smashed fingers, one large coffee spilled on the garage floor, two blow out pectoral muscles and a totally sweat through pair of overalls the spring is on!!!

Tool worked like a charm, and totally with the money.

My suggestion, avoid getting hemorrhoids and pay to have it done.

Thanks for the advise to all who gave it.

The more expensive ones have thrust bearings behind each nut. This makes it easier to turn. I am told that king pin thrust bearings for an AA truck will fit onto the cheaper spring spreader you have.

I also have the cheaper version ( I have been using it for years). I keep forgetting to check out the AA thrust bearings.

You don't have to go crazy tighening the nuts, only enough to take the pressure off the shackles.

ive done mine several times with no major problems . only time i had problems was when i tried using "C" clamps & vise grips ! LOL mine is home made with washers for ease . as Tom said ...........

Yes, had mine done. Have enough in life to worry about and will never get to do it "all"....

I used a method that I have never seen mentioned, I built some brackets that bolt to the spring. Then made some ends for my portapower that bolt to the brackets. Worked good, I went this route because I was insalling a spring with reversed eyes, and didnt think the normal tools would work.
